by Site Author on 28 September, 2023

Colchester Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson, Martin Goss has joined over 120,000 other people who have signed to support the petition by Shelter calling on the Government to progress the Renters Reform Bill.

In Colchester  there are 21.6% of Colchester residents privately renting; any of whom could be presented with a Section 21 ‘no-fault’ eviction notice. Shelter estimates that 5,223 families a month face homelessness and uncertainty, being let down by the government which has not progressed the Renters Reform Bill. 13.3% of Colchester residents are renting in social housing with a total of 34.9% of Colchester residents renting in some capacity.

Martin Goss said:

Colchester residents must be protected in their home and the failure of this government to delay this legislation is unacceptable for all those at risk of eviction through no fault of themselves.

“I fully support Shelters campaign that calls for an end to unfair evictions; to create a national landlord register through the new property portal and to make income and discrimination against renters with children illegal.”

Martin is encouraging Colchester residents to support the petition by Shelter through their website at england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/campaigns/renters_reform_bill

Martin added:

There are some households who have been forced out of their home through no fault twice during the past year.

“Some landlords are facing difficulties during the cost of living crisis, I fear there could be increased pressures on landlords to evict tenants without fault therefore it is important to provide support for both tenants and landlords to prevent avoidable evictions.”
