Prospective MP spends festive period helping dustmen and joining the Police
Within days of being selected as their Parliamentary candidate by Colchester Liberal Democrats, Councillor Martin Goss has already been busy arranging meetings and experiencing life from spending a day being a dustmen to and evening out with the Police.
This month has seen Martin spend Christmas Eve joining the dustcarts in Colchester to help pick up rubbish. He explained: “I felt it was only right and proper to lead from the front – staff were coming in Christmas Eve when many residents were starting to enjoy their festive holidays, so I decided to spend mine on the front line with our staff. It was really enjoyable and there was a great atmosphere on the street when meeting residents along the way.”
On Friday night (29th December), Martin spent the evening with Colchester Police to experience policing for himself. Afterwards he said: “I am so proud of our police force. There is so much that they are doing that we are unaware of, in supporting and protecting us.
“While with the Colchester Police Team we dealt with many issues travelling to many different areas in and around Colchester including a number of villages so I saw first hand the different issues affecting our area. It is quite clear that our police staff are pushed where staff have been cut by 2/3 in real terms due to horrific and successive cuts in Government funding. It’s no question that has affected crime figures and affected Colchester residents.”
Martin also has arranged further meetings and visits in the New Year, including with the Fire Service. He said: “I want to ensure that I am fully briefed and aware of the issues of all services and individuals in Colchester to best represent my home town.”
